Private VLANs

Private VLANs (Virtual Local Area Networks) allow you to configure a closed network for communication between your servers. You also have the flexibility to configure the relevant IP addresses of servers within the network, in any way you need to.

Limitations

Before using a Private VLAN, there are some limitations that should be kept in mind.

  • Private VLANs are currently only supported on the High Performance Virtual Server platform. They cannot be used with Cloud Container servers, or a regular VPS.
  • Servers can only be attached to a given Private VLAN, if they're in the same location as that VLAN.

Purchasing a VLAN

  1. Log in to the SiteHost Control Panel.
  2. Click the "Add Service" button top/right.
  3. Choose the Private VLAN product at the bottom of the page.
  4. Fill out the form, choosing the location you want and the number of VLANs you need.
    • Please refer to the limitations section, if you haven't already.
  5. Click Place Order.
  6. Once we receive your order, we'll get in touch with you as soon as we can to add the VLAN to your account.

Managing VLANs

  1. When logged into the Control Panel , click Servers in the left menu.
  2. Click Private VLANs in the list below Servers, to bring you to the Private VLANs module.
  3. Select the VLAN you want to manage from the table on screen.
  4. From here, you can fill out the form you see with your requirements.
    • You can give your VLAN a label, to make it easier to find throughout the Control Panel
    • You can add or remove servers from your VLAN, by clicking on the Servers field
  5. Click Save Changes

You can also manage the VLANs that an individual server is linked to, directly on that server's page. This operates identically to what can be done in the Private VLANs module.

Configuring Servers

Once you've attached a server to a VLAN in the Control Panel, you'll need to configure the new network interface that appears on it, as per your requirements. Note: The configuration process will differ depending on the OS you're using.

If your server is linked to multiple different VLANs, you can differentiate the network interfaces via their Mac Address. You can find these addresses in the Control Panel.

Viewing Mac Addresses

  1. When logged into the Control Panel , click Servers in the left menu.
  2. Select the server you want to configure from the table on screen.
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the page, you should see a table labelled Private VLANs. This table shows you all the VLANs that this particular server is linked to.
  4. Check the Mac Address column for the VLAN you're interested in.
