DNS Templates

DNS Templates are designed to remove endless repetition in setting up your DNS records. They also make it easier to manage many domains as changes are made only once to the Template and all linked DNS Zones are updated automatically.

Default Templates

SiteHost has created some default DNS Templates to cater for some of our common customers requirements.

For example:

  • SiteHost Shared Hosting PHP5 - GMail MX - Sets all the DNS records required for a website to be hosted on the SiteHost shared hosting servers, but all the email to be managed by the Gmail servers.
  • SiteHost Shared Hosting PHP5 - Sets all the DNS records required for a domain to be used with the SiteHost shared hosting servers.

Create Your Own Templates

You can also define your own DNS Templates. If you are a web developer managing multiple websites on your servers, for example, you could set up a DNS template that points the wildcard (@) and the www A record to your web servers IP, and then use this Template for all website domains on that server. Or if you have a number of clients using Google Apps you could create a Google Apps Domain template to point the website at your SiteHost VPS, and all mail/calendar records at the Google servers.

To create a template, follow the steps:

  1. Click the DNS Zones module from the menu on the left.
  2. Click Templates under DNS Zones on the menu. A list of all the DNS Templates defined in your account will show.
  3. At the top of the page, click the Add Template option.
  4. Enter the name you would like to give this template and click Add DNS Template.
  5. Fill in the Record Name field as required (@, www, mail)
  6. Select the correct type (A, CNAME, MX)
  7. Fill in the Record Address field as required (123.123.123.123, mydomain.co.nz, mx1.sitehost.co.nz)
  8. Click Save Changes to confirm the changes to the template.

Update Existing Templates

To manage already created templates, follow the steps:

  1. Click the DNS Zones module from the menu on the left.
  2. Click Templates under DNS Zones on the menu. A list of all the DNS Templates defined in your account will show.
  3. On the list of DNS Templates defined in your account, click on the entry you wish to edit.
  4. Update/Add information ensuring you select the correct type (A, CNAME, MX).
  5. Click Save Changes to confirm the changes to the template file.

Changing a DNS Template will affect all zones that are currently using this template.
