Monitoring Services

You can use the SiteHost Control Panel to set up email alerts to make sure your Servers and Containers are up and running.

The SiteHost monitoring servers are based in New Zealand and may use one of the following IP addresses;

  • 116.251.193.56
  • 172.105.189.211

If you are implementing a restrictive firewall on the system that hosts the services that you are wanting to monitor, please ensure that these IP addresses are whitelisted or permitted access.

To monitor international connectivity we recommend setting up alerts with an external provider (based overseas) in addition to the SiteHost NZ monitoring service.

Currently we allow you to monitor a server for these services:

Service Checks Alerts
DNS Verifies server is responding to nslookup queries. After a 10 second timeout.
FTP Checks FTP connections with the specified host (or unix socket). After a 10 second timeout.
HTTP Verifies it can open a HTTP connection with the host. Connection refusals and timeouts (10 seconds) send CRITICAL alerts. Incorrect responses send WARNINGS, and other errors send STATE UNKNOWN.
HTTPS Verifies it can open a HTTPS connection with the host. Connection refusals and timeouts (10 seconds) send CRITICAL alerts. Incorrect responses send WARNINGS, and other errors send STATE UNKNOWN.
IMAP Verifies it can make IMAP connections with the specified host (or unix socket). After a 10 second timeout.
IMAPS Verifies it can make SSL IMAP connections with the specified host (or unix socket). After a 10 second timeout.
PING Uses the ping command to probe the specified host for packet loss (percentage) and round trip average (milliseconds). A round trip time of 100ms or 20% packet loss will generate a WARNING. A round trip time of 500ms or 60% packet loss will generate a CRITICAL alert.
POP3 Verifies it can make SSL POP connections with the specified host (or unix socket). After a 10 second timeout.
POP3S Verifies it can make SSL POP connections with the specified host (or unix socket). After a 10 second timeout.
SSH This check will try to connect to an SSH server at the specified host on port 22. After a 10 second timeout.
SMTP Verifies it can open a SMTP connection with the specified host. Connection refusals and timeouts (10 seconds) send CRITICAL alerts. Incorrect responses send WARNINGS, and other errors send STATE UNKNOWN.
SMTPS Verifies it can open a SSL SMTP connection with the specified host. Connection refusals and timeouts (10 seconds) send CRITICAL alerts. Incorrect responses send WARNINGS, and other errors send STATE UNKNOWN.

How to Add a Host to Be Monitored

  1. When logged in to the Control Panel, click Monitoring in the left menu.
  2. Click the Add Host button in the top right.
  3. Enter the host name of the server (for example www.example.com).
  4. Enter the IP Address of the server.
  5. Select the contact group to be emailed using the dropdown selector create a new one by clicking the Create Group button.
  6. Click Add Host to be taken to the add service screen.
  7. Choose which service you would like monitored, you can add more than one after monitoring has been set up.
  8. Click Add Service to begin monitoring.

Add a New Service to An Existing Host Monitoring

  1. When logged in to the Control Panel, click Monitoring in the left menu.
  2. Select the host you would like to add a service to by clicking the host name of that host.
  3. Click the Add Service button in the top right.
  4. Choose your service from the selector.
  5. Click Add Service to add this service to your existing host monitoring.

Remove a Service From Host Monitoring

  1. When logged in to the Control Panel, click Monitoring in the left menu.
  2. Select the host you would like to remove a service from by clicking the host name of that host.
  3. Under "Currently Monitored Services" find the service you wish to remove and click the More Actions icon (᛫᛫᛫) on that row.
  4. Select Remove Service from the dropdown menu.
  5. Confirm you want to remove that service by clicking Stop Monitoring inside the modal pop up.

Remove a Host From Monitoring

  1. When logged in to the Control Panel, click Monitoring in the left menu.
  2. Find the host that you wish to remove and click the More Actions icon (᛫᛫᛫) on that row.
  3. Select Delete Host from the dropdown menu.
  4. Confirm you want to remove the host by clicking Delete Host inside the modal pop up.

All contact groups have to be removed before deleting a host.
