How do I log in using SSH?

Last updated September 13th, 2010

Where SiteHost provides login access to servers and services we standardise on SSH. SSH stands for "Secure Shell", a security protocol which encrypts your login details and all communication between you and the remote server or device.

Here is a rundown of how to log in using SSH on different platforms.

You will need to download and install a SSH client, software that allows you to use SSH. We recommend PuTTY and the following instructions will get you started:

  1. Download PuTTY (look for putty.exe). Download the file to a location where it will be easy to locate and run.

  2. Double-click the PuTTY icon to open the application.

  3. When the main application screen opens enter your servers IP number or address into the "Host Name (or IP Address)" box: PuTTY

  4. If this is the first time using PuTTY to access your server you will be presented with a Security Alert, basically asking you to verify you want to access this unknown server. Click "Yes":

  5. At the login screen type your Username and press enter. Type your Password and press enter.

  6. You should now be logged into your server.

Linux and Mac OS X

On Linux simply open a standard terminal window.

On Mac OS X open the "Terminal" app found in Applications -> Utilities. Or use Spotlight to search for "Terminal".

You can then log into your server using SSH by running the following commands:

  1. Run the SSH command using your Username and servers Host Name or IP (represented by below):

  2. If you are asked to confirm the authenticity of the server type "yes".

  3. Type your password and press enter.

  4. You should now be logged into your server.
